Introducing Mistle: a background agent platform
Mistle helps engineering teams run background agents with secure sandboxes, brokered credentials, reusable snapshots, and inspectable sessions.
Background agents will become a core engineering capability in every organization.
Stripe Minions, Ramp Inspect, Shopify River, and WorkOS Horizon are internal implementations of that capability inside large engineering organizations.
Building this kind of capability is a major engineering investment. It requires shifting engineering work away from product into building, operating, and maintaining an internal platform.
What teams have to build
Making this work takes more than giving an agent access to a repo.
The base build is substantial: handling integrations, isolated agent environments, credential brokering, prepared sandbox images, inspectable sessions, triggers, and identity attribution across systems.
A prototype can come together in a few days, but productionizing it for reliability takes months. Keeping the platform adaptable to new capabilities requires ongoing investment. With AI progressing this quickly, your tooling may already be dated by the time it arrives.
Mistle as an operating layer for background agents
Mistle provides the core primitives teams need to run background agents around existing engineering tools:
- Integrations connect external systems and models such as GitHub, Slack, Linear, and OpenAI.
- Credential brokering lets agents use external services without secrets living in sandboxes.
- Identity attribution links users to external accounts so agent work can be attributed to the right person.
- Sandbox profiles define the tools, permissions, and environment an agent starts with.
- Snapshots capture prepared sandbox environments so sessions start quickly with the required tools, dependencies, and configuration already in place.
- Sessions give teams an inspectable workspace for agent work such as debugging, code review, and repository changes.
- Triggers respond to external events, such as webhook deliveries from connected systems.
Teams can bring their own model keys and sandbox providers. For integrations like Slack and GitHub, Mistle helps teams quickly set up apps they own, keeping permissions under their control.
This lets teams focus on experimenting and developing agentic engineering workflows.
